Skyline Drive

One of the most iconic road trips on the east coast is Skyline Drive! This spectacular roadway winds through 105 miles of the mountainous Shenandoah National Park. Skyline Drive boasts endless breathtaking views. If a camping trip is your style, there are four campgrounds along the way to spend the night. Skyland Resort, right off Skyline Drive, has cabins available to rent overlooking the Shenandoah Valley for other accommodations.

Presidential Homes Trip

Virginia is rich in political history and is the birthplace of many of America's leaders; in fact, eight American presidents have called this place home. Most of their homes are within a short drive of one another. This road includes Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Madison's Montpelier, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library, and many more! It's easy to make this fantastic drive a weekend getaway for the family with an early start.

Virginia's Eastern Shore

This Virginia area is often forgotten about, which makes it even more appealing for a weekend road trip. Starting at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, you'll find the Cape Charles welcome center to guide you through the best locations along the shore. There are a lot of souvenir shops and specialty stores. Additionally, Kiptopeke boasts miles of coastal trails for nature enthusiasts. Heading north, Onancock is rich in history, including the Kerr House, as well as exhibits and events exploring Coastal Virginia's long history. Be sure not to miss Wallops Island, where visitors can watch rockets launch into outer space. Lastly, the Assateague Lighthouse is another must-see destination.

The Colonial Parkway

The Colonial Parkway is part of the Colonial National Historical Park. The parkway explores an area known as America's Historic Triangle, including three main historic sites; Jamestown, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg. While it's a short 23-mile drive that can be completed in about an hour, most visitors spend a day, or more, exploring the area's history that spans 174 years.
